English Version

On the experience of being invited to 18 ª edition of the poetry festival in Curtea de Arges (Romania), organized by the Orient-Occident Academy

In these days later to the experience of the festival, we have been debating if to write this chronicle or not. On the one hand, there are our friends and contacts which we do not want that they feel involved or compromised in no way. For other one, the need to denounce a situation that well might repeat, and it nothing helps to the situation of poetry in the world, not neither of the art in general. Because for it, we say that this is just our vision, and without the intention of lacking respect from nobody, we want to transmit our sensation of injustice, at par that something incomprehensible. It was also making us doubt to the fact that our words seemed to imply our companions of festival, and nothing it is further of our intention. So we also must clarify that we do not claim any complicity with anybody, if this one takes place, we will receive it with satisfaction, but at first, these words are of exclusive responsibility of those who sign.

We also want to give express witness of our gratefulness towards Cristian Sabau who dealt with the dossiers of press before and after the festival and whose effort and work deserves all our recognition.

Saying this, we qualify: We are annoying, uncomfortable and angry, all though it would be more necessary to say that we are astonished.

To be invited to 18 ª edition of the festival of poetry in Curtea de Arges (Romania) had looked to us like an exciting offer and we confront it with lots of illusion. The approach could not have been better, participants of diverse nationalities with absolutely impressive curriculum that guaranteeing a wealth-producing experience. In this sense this was the way, seven days sharing the festival with the most beautiful people full of humility and wisdom. And with this we remain, with a magnificent human level experience.

So if the exposition that one does to himself on having been present at an event of international height is contacting and knowing to other artists and their work, and at the same time that they know the own one, it is also clear that the organization has the responsibility of offering a frame that favors such a contact.

When the quotation of the inscription is so high, people wait that the organization provides to everybody with one dossier with artistic information about all the participating in the festival, in English at least, but the only curriculum that the organization provided us was the same that appears in the festival anthology and in Rumanian.

The organization did not propose to the participants, the organization just read a list –name of participant and country-, so the opportunity to share works and know each other was on one’s own initiative.

Probably and bearing in mind that we have six days, it is of wishing too that the poets could recite with certain tranquility. So, if 30 poets have been summoned, they should be distributed in meetings of 4 poets at most (what already represents a good daily moment listening poems), but we passed the 2 first days more than five hours imprisoned in a room badly equipped, leading a kind of "open-mic" where 15 of 30 poets recite without rest for nobody. After these 2 days the organization finished with the readings in the festival. The majority of participants have moved up to Romania to read one only poem, some of them have had more luck and they had obtained the second reading when they turned out to be finalists or winners of the prizes that last day, in the closing of the festival, grants the Academy Orient-Occident.
It is frequently in these events to entertain the acts with some performance of some locally group, also with recitals (much more brief) of local poets. It is also normal to make small excursions in order to rest from many hours listening people recite, understanding that what is going to be done in a recital of poetry, it is precisely this. But it is not so frequent that there are more events of folklore than participation of the poets invited.

That one of the organizers decides to lead an exhibition about not conventional books (Vidra's books), typical of the Rumanian art, it can be considered (and to be) very interesting. But if his exhibition spreads more than hour and a half with the unique help of a translator who only speaks English and Rumanian -reducing time to the interventions of the invited poets- the situation changes into a lack of respect towards the participants.

It is not frequent and neither polite that all the poets invited come to the recital of the local ones but that the organization does not foresee the assistance of the above mentioned in the interventions of the others. The result was that local poets only appeared the day that they were had to recite, with all of us as a certainly enthusiastic public, whereas in our scanty interventions (two) we were our own public.

If in addition we return to remember that the quota of inscription to this festival is not any excess, it does not also seem consequent that in the excursions (and in the rest of activities) there was only a translator from the Rumanian to English and vice versa. That means that the organization ignored completely the rest of invited countries and their respective languages. For example there were 5 countries of Spanish speakers and 7 poets, the same for French speakers which representation was also important in the festival and the Arabic speakers, another large community either.

Other topic with maximum importance was food. 30 poets of diverse nationalities and cultures will raise problems of feeding incompatibilities: not they all can eat pork, not they all can eat meat, etc. … On the other hand, nothing so unachievable that could not be resolved with respect and good disposition, but in this case the manners were really rough, the quality though it is true that was not deficient  was, to say it softly, repetitive. Six days eating chicken and soup (of chicken, of course) or for vegetarian people polenta, mushrooms and peas, that seems to us to be rather poor dietetically speaking. In one occasion, they tried to give to one of us a fish dish, making it pass for vegetarian, and after our insistence in rejecting it, they were getting angry and they were shouting us that the fish was a perfectly vegetarian plate because it was not meat.

The schedules are also a delicate topic, but in general, they must attend to the simple international norm that reigns in hotels. Lunch time is 12p.m. to 14p.m. and dinner time is between 19p.m. to 21p.m., but we had and a really strange schedule like lunch at 15p.m. and dinner some days at 23p.m. others at 21p.m. or at 23:30p.m., without any regular planning because the schedules were changing depending the day. It was the same for lunch time.

This festival is organized by the Orient-Occident Academy, which is formed by 2 people, a married couple (they were not present during the festival). This would not be exceptional at all, saving the fact that the words "academy", "international", "festival", make think about an organization of large members and with certain infrastructure, but this academy does not have a visible headquarter, and we do not know any other activity out of the festival, the publishing house and its translation services, services that surprised us very much because none of two members of the academy and visible organizers of the festival know, for example in our case, the Spanish language. We want to believe that they work with external translators as collaborators and that is the reason that the copies of the anthology were selling at nothing less than 30 Euros.

And the worst of the situation is that this festival does not have any cybernetic repercussion. If we live in the age of digital communication this is the easiest way for those that live to many thousands of kilometers of distance of announcing our step along the event. And at the same time is the easiest way to know what happened in previous festivals (let's remember that this one is the 18th edition). So it is almost surprising to find only a blog dedicated to the festival (with international character) which last post is dated in February of this year, that means that nobody has done any diffusion of the present edition and nobody has not even presented the participants poets.

For us to be present at this meeting it was an effort. It was an economically effort and also regarding infrastructure was an effort too. We expected to be present at an event of international height and to be treated with carefulness. We understand that to organize a festival of these characteristics is not easy (I do not want to imagine the efforts compromised in festivals as Medellin, Puerto Rico and great others in which the appointment is not precisely with 30 poets if not with 150!), but what we neither understand and we do not even tolerate are the bad modals that we had to support in occasions like, for example, that one of the members of the organization did not say a word to us in six days, not at least to greet us, except in his own presentations or personal splendor in the different acts that this person lead. And there were not cultural differences if not a question of bad education. We do not tolerate the linguistic abandon to which we met doomed. We do not tolerate the artistic abandon that we suffered (for read just one poem it is not necessary to do so many kilometers). We do not tolerate having been treated as schoolboys (with an examination included, literally! Poets were requested to write and sign answers about a series of dictated questions - not typed - that were including topics as: The poem that more we had liked of strictly between ourselves; if we had been in Romania previously - what relevancy will be able to have the above mentioned question for the festival?, or what things we were finding improvable from the festival - as the list was so large we had not time to answer it correctly-.

One of the members from the organization had to stay away for being physically very badly due to the headaches that "this group" slightly united we were causing him. Apparently he did not notice that this "disunion" was not another thing that pure indignation, indignation on the basis of the received service; indignation for the improper prices masked in a supposed "quota of inscription"; indignation for the clear lacking in professionalism; indignation for the continuous improvisation of everything what was going on (all the participants received an email with a program that the organization did not respect –schedules or events-. To that effect the organization realized one of the shameful acts to which we have had the misfortune to assist, and we want to clarify that we do no say this for the companions, who acted always with a smile in their lips and with the good intention to take apart (though that they were proposing to us did not have rhyme or reason). One of the evenings, after a large soporific introduction, one of the members of the Academy Orient-Occident, decided that the best way of spending the rest of the evening was not to recite poetry or present the poets or in any case to propose any activity so as to present our respective literary projects. On the contrary, that person thought that it was more interesting that each one was singing or telling a story or telling a joke, etc., whatever that was concerned to the original culture of the poet. Please do not misunderstand us, it was even entertaining but we wonder for what the hell we had to fly more than 1.900 km and naturally why we had to pay so much money.

We have the moral obligation to expose our non-conformity with this 18th edition of the festival because all the above explained. We do not know how were the previous ones, but if after 18 years the result has been through the one that we have lived,  we cannot be more than  disappointed and very angry.
